"With languages, you are at home anywhere"
Edmund de Waal

Vision and Rationale

We believe learning a new language opens doors to exciting opportunities and helps children see the world in a whole new way. It’s not just about words – it’s about building confidence, resilience, and the ability to connect with others, even when communication feels tricky. Through our language curriculum, we spark curiosity and nurture a lifelong love of exploring different cultures and languages, preparing children for an increasingly global society.

Learning a language gives children so much more than vocabulary. It strengthens communication and literacy skills, builds an understanding of how languages work, and helps them spot similarities and differences between English and other languages. It’s a wonderful way to raise awareness of the multilingual, multicultural world we live in and to encourage open-mindedness and respect for others.

We see language learning as the first step toward appreciating diversity and recognising that differences make the world richer and more interesting. By the time children leave us, they will have a solid foundation in language skills and, most importantly, the enthusiasm to keep learning as they move on to the next stage of their education.

Our Languages Curriculum

Whole School

We follow the national curriculum.

Our chosen foreign language is Spanish.  We use the Language Angels teaching platform which has been carefully written to address the national curriculum attainment targets. The programme and its resources enable us to teach children in a fun and interactive way, so that they can develop communication skills that lay the foundation for future language learning.

Using the Language Angels guidance, we have carefully selected units to create our own scheme of work to meet the needs of our pupils. In line with guidance from Language Angels, we have chosen to teach Spanish from EYFS to Year 6. Five units are taught in each year group. These units are spread across the six terms.

Note: we moved to Language Angels in 2024.  We are working closely with Language Angels to write an overview each year that takes into account the teaching the children will have received through the previous scheme in order to ensure a strong progression. Therefore, there are currently some repeated units across year groups.  The overview and teaching will be reviewed by Language Angels in May of each academic year.  We expect to have our permanent overview in place by September 2027.
