In our Year 1 classes, the children have been learning about materials. They used a variety of modelling objects to make boats. They checked if materials were waterproof and explored floating and sinking.
Year 2 have started learning about moving mechanisms in DT and will be learning more about linkages and pivots for their own moving monsters.
As part of their end of year project, Year 3 are learning all about modern scientists and the impact they have had on our lives. This week, we started with Marie Curie and made handprint x-rays after learning about her discovery of radioactivity.
Year 4 may have completed their MTC this week but they are still practicing their times tables with booklets and TTRS in class. We don't want them to forget their times tables before they get to Year 5!
Year 5 have really taken off this week with their science learning focused on hot air balloons. After learning the ropes of flight, they were on cloud nine as they designed and built their own models with creativity soaring to new heights. They were ballooning with pride at the effort they've shown, it was certainly been an uplifting afternoon.
Year 6 have been writing a balanced argument in English this week. They have shown great maturity showing the reasons for and against the banning of mobile phones for children under 16.
A BIG SHOUT OUT: A massive thank you to our PTA who have been the busiest of bees this week finishing all of the prep for the summer fete.

Think it is fair to say that we found three ‘willing’ volunteers who were incredibly dedicated to the task ahead and fully committed to their role.

PARKING 🚗 🚘 🚙
Our main car park will be closed to all cars except for staff and PTA members. Our accessible bays and visitor carpark will remain open. Please park responsibly.
GATES 🚪
Our GREENWOOD and NUTWELL gates are the only gates that we will open today.
LOST CHILDREN 👦 🧒
Should go to the main office. Please take a moment to point this out to children. They can also go to any stall and say that they are lost. If you have toddlers/young children, it is advised that you note their outfit so you could describe them quickly. Wristbands are available at the entrance for you to write your number on, should you wish.
FIRST AID ⛑️
Will be available in the main office. Please see a stall holder if you require assistance.
HEAT ☀️
Please ensure your child has suncream on and lots to drink. We would also advise a hat. If you or your family feel unwell, please see a stall holder. We have cool spaces that are available.
BAGS & LOST PROPERTY 💼
Please inform a stall holder if you see a bag that has been left unattended or if you find any lost property.
FIRE AND/OR EVACUATION 🔥
In the unlikely event that we need to evacuate the site, the outside fire alarm sounders will ring. We will also make an announcement on the PA system. Please follow instructions and take your family onto the grass. Gates for MENDIP AVENUE and COPLEY GARDENS will then be opened to allow safe exit.
USING THE SITE 🛝 🌳
Please note that the adventure zone, tyres, sandpit and other OPAL items ARE NOT accessible today. Please take a moment to explain this to your child. The ground is quite uneven in places so please be careful. Please be careful around our hedges - there are nettles and brambles present.
TOILETS 🚽
Will be available in our portakabins (YEAR 3 classrooms)

Our Play Charter was written by our school council. It is a set of rules that will help to make sure OPAL play sessions are safe and fair, allowing all children to take part in fun, active play.
We searched high and low for signage to display our charter on the playgrounds but could not find anything we liked.
ENTER MRS HAYWARD AND MISS SMITH!
These two very good eggs are well known at Mendip for being very creative. They put the art talents to work and designed and painted these signs after school, at weekends and during holidays.
A big thank you to them from us all. We think our new signs are beautiful and we are very lucky to have something so unique and special.
A thank you to Mr West as well for navigating rain, puddles and ladders yesterday to put these up for us. He showed true dedication to the spirit level!
