Curriculum Overview
"The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you"
B.B. King
Our Curriculum Intent
At Mendip Green Primary School, we offer a curriculum that is both ambitious and inspiring. It challenges our children, building resilience, while nurturing a passion for learning. Progressively sequenced, our curriculum carefully builds on prior knowledge, ensuring children develop a clear, connected understanding of the subjects they study.
Learning at Mendip Green, is rich in powerful knowledge, inspiring stories and wide-ranging vocabulary. Our curriculum is designed to evoke a love of storytelling and open doors that allow children to explore the world beyond their everyday experiences, leaving them brimming with curiosity and wonder. Through these experiences, they grow into independent, reflective learners with a positive work ethic, who think deeply and solve problems with confidence.
At Mendip Green Primary School, we celebrate what makes every child special. We welcome differences and embrace individuality, recognising that every child is a unique individual who deserves to feel valued and included. Our curriculum is designed to be relevant and accessible to all learners. However, teaching is adapted to ensure that every child feels included and supported.
We believe all children deserve a broad and balanced curriculum throughout their time at primary school. Our curriculum is underpinned by the teaching of essential knowledge, skills, concepts and values that they will need to become proficient both academically and socially. Our lessons spark curiosity, encourage imagination, and inspire a love of learning that lasts. We ensure children feel happy and safe to explore new ideas and ask questions. We help them develop confidence, perseverance, and a positive attitude towards learning so they see challenges as opportunities and believe they can achieve great things.
We believe that each child’s experience of learning during their primary years will not simply help them succeed in school – it will prepare them for life. By developing independence, creativity, strong interpersonal skills and a passion for learning (in all its forms), we give our children the tools they need to thrive in the future.

When children leave Mendip Green, they leave us with a strong sense of belonging to a caring, close-knit community. They have grown in confidence, learned how to make decisions, reflect on their choices, and connect ideas in meaningful ways. We are invested in guiding children as they develop the courage, values and morals they need to ‘do the right thing’: to live with kindness and respect so they can make a positive contribution to their communities.
We make sure every child is well-prepared for the next stage of their learning journey and for life in a world that is dynamic, diverse, and ever-changing. Through our curriculum, all children, including those who face additional challenges, gain the powerful knowledge and essential skills they need to succeed and thrive.
Curriculum Rationale
"A curriculum exists to change the pupil, to give the pupil new power"
Christine Counsell
Our curriculum opens up a world of different perspectives for our children. Through their learning, they will see that a geographer would view the same landscape through a different lens than a poet, a historian, an artist or an engineer...
By exploring these viewpoints, children step into the shoes of experts and experience what it feels like to think like one. They learn that each of the national curriculum subjects is not just something to study – it’s a discipline that shapes how we understand the world. Along the way, they will understand the role of people who work in these fields, appreciate their contributions, and learn that they too could follow any of these paths in the future, should they wish.
Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Development
The social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of the children in our care is at the heart of our curriculum and underpins the ethos and values of Mendip Green Primary School.
Our Curriculum is shaped by:
- the aspirations we have for our children, both now and in the future
- the kind of people we wish our children to become as they grow and contribute to their community and wider world
- the world we aspire to create for the children in our care and the world the children wish to have for their future
- the education we aspire to provide for the children at Mendip Green
We use SMSC as a vehicle to promote Fundamental British Values
- democracy
- the rule of law
- individual liberty
- mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith
An Inclusive Curriculum
Mendip Green’s curriculum is designed to be inclusive of the needs of each individual child. We endeavour to ensure that appropriate provision and challenge is in place for every child irrespective of their starting point so they make progress throughout their time with us.
Our Mendip Green Curriculum Policy can be found in the Policies section of our website.
