Design and Technology

"I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won't work"
Thomas Edison

Vision and Rationale

Our design and technology curriculum provides opportunities for children to design and make products that address real problems in a range of contexts. It inspires children to be innovative and creative thinkers who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through ideation, creation, and evaluation. We aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage pupils to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements.

The choices we have made within our design and technology curriculum will enable children to draw upon their knowledge from a range of subjects – science, maths, history, computing and art – whilst still ensuring that the teaching and learning of the design technology curriculum is authentic and not compromised. We want children to develop the confidence to take risks, through drafting design concepts, modelling, and testing and to be reflective learners who evaluate their work and the work of others as well as responding to constructive criticism to enhance their own work. Children will create and communicate the purpose of the products they design and create so that they become resourceful and enterprising, understanding the impact of design and technology on their own lives and the lives of others.

Our Design and Technology Curriculum

Early Years Foundation Stage – Expressive Arts and Design

The educational programme for expressive arts and design out in the EYFS Framework is delivered in our reception classes in line with the Extend Reception Curriculum.

Reception Curriculum

Key Stage 1 and 2 – Design and Technology

We follow the national curriculum.

In Year 1, we teach design and technology in line with our multi-academy trust’s ‘Extend Early Curriculum’.

We follow the Kapow scheme of work to teach design and technology in Year 2-6.  This scheme is fully aligned with the national curriculum whilst complimenting effective learning strategies through progressively sequenced teaching.

We follow the ‘condensed’ Kapow scheme of work. Design and technology is taught for half of the year - teaching time is alternated between teaching design and technology and art and design.
