Art & Design
"You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have"
Maya Angelou
Vision
Our art and design curriculum stimulates children’s creativity and imagination by providing visual, tactile and sensory experiences that evolve an appreciation, understanding and interpretation of the world around them. Children will feel confident exploring and experimenting in art, with real enjoyment and pride. They will understand the relevance of art in our lives. Through these experiences, children will see art as a source of wonder and amazement, yet also achievable and accessible for all.
Rationale
We believe that by the time every child leaves primary school they can feel as if they have found an area of the visual arts that is relevant and engaging to them – that might be through drawing, making, designing, or talking about art. By providing children with opportunities to explore and develop their skills across a wide range of techniques each child can find the thing that strikes a chord with them.
They will communicate their ideas by learning how to handle materials, use a variety of media and work safely with tools. Alongside this, children learn important skills of critiquing, both their own work and that of others, then responding to constructive criticism for ways to enhance their work. Our curriculum will expose children to a wide range of artists, designers and works of art from around the world and throughout time.
By combining technical skills with contextual and conceptual understanding, our curriculum helps ensure every pupil feels entitled to embrace their own creativity as something which is important to them, and something which is valued by society.
Our Art & Design Curriculum
Early Years Foundation Stage – Expressive Arts and Design
The educational programme for expressive arts and design, set out in the EYFS Framework, is delivered in our reception classes in line with the Extend Extend Reception Curriculum.
Key Stage 1 and 2 – Art & Design
We follow the national curriculum.
In Year 1, we teach art and design in line with our multi-academy trust’s ‘Extend Early Curriculum’.
We follow the AccessArt scheme of work in Year 2 – 6 to deliver a rich, broad, balanced, diverse and engaging art curriculum.
We follow the ‘split’ AccessArt scheme of work. Art is taught for half of the year - teaching time is alternated between art and design and teaching design and technology.
